Music Teaching Gone Wrong: The Risk of Rigid Instruction

When music teaching becomes about strict rules, technical drills, and inflexible methods, it can damage a child's confidence—especially for those with autism or ADHD. Tristan’s story highlights this exact issue. As a child, he loved music but was discouraged by a piano teacher who focused on doing things “by the book.” The result? Five years without music.

Top 5 Red Flags to Watch Out For

If your child is about to start lessons, here are the signs to avoid in a music teacher or program:

  • No flexibility in teaching style
  • Insistence on posture and perfection over enjoyment
  • Dismissal of student creativityShame-based feedback or comparisons
  • Ignoring sensory or emotional needs

These aren't just poor teaching methods --- they're deal-breakers for neurodivergent kids.

The Importance of Adaptive and Student-Led Learning

At Autism Music Australia, we follow your child’s lead. If they want to learn anime themes, classic rock, or their own songs—they can. We use our signature color-coded method to simplify complex concepts and give each learner control over their journey. Music should be exciting, never exhausting.

This colour-coded system provides a whole new visual trigger designed to speed up the development of the fine motor skills necessary to play music easily and correctly on their chosen instrument.

Every Achievement is Celebrated

We believe every achievement is a HUGE SUCCESS to be CELEBRATED!

Although learning music is what it is all about, for us, it comes second to making your child feel like they are able to achieve anything in this life.

It could be the simpler things like hitting their hand on a drum for two beats in a row or being able to confidently find the middle C on a piano.

Or more tricky things, such as playing Fur Elise by Beethoven, the guitar solo of Sweet Child o Mine, or the latest Tailor Swift or Ed Sheeran song, it is all celebrated equally by our teachers.

We consistently focus on building exceptional confidence and having stupid amounts of fun throughout our time together.
